The Liberian National Soccer Team And The Under-23 Lost Vital Games
Unless the necessary programs are put in place and politics and self-interest are set aside from football, those who control football and the national football teams will continue to bring Liberia to shame.
The Liberian Football Association continues to create the avenues for more whipping from our various national teams. Over the weekend, the national senior and under-23 teams suffered heavy defeats in two international football competitions.
In the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the senior Lone Star lost 2-4 to Cape Verde on Saturday, March 26. Another disgrace for Liberian football came on Sunday March 27 when the Under-23s suffered a humiliating defeat at the Ivory Coast Under-23 games in Accra during the London 2012 Olympic qualifiers.
Liberia was beaten 0-4 by the Ivorians. The country conceded a total of eight goals in two days in two international matches. Such a horrible picture of football for Liberia can only be attributed to the inability of the current Liberia Football Association or LFA administration led by Musa Bility.
Our football authority did not plan and prepare because they had nothing to prepare so they had nothing to implement as a nation on Saturday March 26 and Sunday March 27, 2011 in Cape Verde and in Ghana.
The road to London 2012 for Liberia saw many setbacks before the final against Ivory Coast after full time.
Lone Star Under-23’s first setback came in a knockout between Jubilee FC and Nimba FC, when Nimba FC’s Sam Johnson was injured following a tackle with the Jubilee FC defender.
The action put the Under-23 striker out of the Lone Star junior team match played in Ghana against Ivory Coast on Sunday March 27. Lone Star Under-23’s second setback came when Israeli base winger Patrick Doeplah died Tuesday morning in Monrovia, after arriving in Liberia for a day of training with the team, before traveling to Ghana . Lone Star Under-23 has settled for the arrival of Liberian striker America Under-20 Alex Nimo to replace the late Patrick Doeplah.
The team landed in Ghana on Thursday, they have been advised that Nimo will not be playing for Liberia, until the correct document is in place. The team was left in the hands of Sekou Jabateh, he tried his best, but they still lost.
The Liberian Football Association has confirmed the scene of the death of Patrick Doeplah, the Israel-based Liberian striker who died early Tuesday morning.
The LFA, in a statement issued on Wednesday March 23, 2011, said the player died at his girlfriend’s home on Old Road, a suburb of Monrovia and not in a hotel room as previously reported.
A medical report quoting Dr Brisbane said Patrick died on Tuesday morning March 22, 2011 upon arrival at JFK Medical Center in Monrovia where he was taken by friends.
According to the LFA: “He had spent the night of March 21 at his fiancee’s home on the Old Road a few hours after he arrived in the country from Israel to be part of the national U-23 delegation in Ghana to engage against Ivory Coast on Sunday”.
The Football House said the government had launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of Patrick Doeplah. The LFA says it is also sponsoring a full autopsy of the player’s remains to determine the basis for his disappearance.
According to a statement signed by LFA spokesperson Henry Flomo, the LFA wishes the player’s family comfort in Almighty God during the period of mourning. The Football House say the loss of Doeplah is huge for the national plan to improve the potential of young players.
Meanwhile, the LFA will open a book of condolences before noon on Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia; it will be preceded by an important press conference.
All football fans, officials, media and members of the LFA are expected. Liberian leader and chief patron of sports Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has presented the LFA with US$20,000 in support of Liberia’s national football teams.
The president also wishes victory for the national team in their efforts in Ivory Coast and Cape Verde. Revealing this on Wednesday, LFA chairman Musa Bility said the Football House was grateful to the chairman for the gesture. He said the amount will help boost the morale of the players.
