Coaching Youth Football – An Insight On How To Run A Successful Youth Football Program
I’ve been coaching youth football for 24 years, from the age of 7 to 14, and I’ve seen just about every conceivable scenario a coach can go through when coaching youth football. I was also a certified high school official for about 7 years or so. I have also seen many changes over the years, not only through the eyes of a coach, but also through the eyes of a parent.
I was on both sides of the ball. As a coach, I had the opportunity to coach as head coach and assistant. As a parent, I have 2 sons who played junior and high school football. Both were average players. Knowing my place as a parent AND as a coach has helped me through some tough times as a parent.
If you are looking to get involved in youth football or currently coach it, this article will give you some insight so that your team can get the necessary instructions to be competitive. If you are reading this article as a parent, I will let you know what is expected of you in return for coaches who volunteer their time to not only coach your child, but to help them grow into young adults. responsible.
My football philosophy is as follows. Dominate the clock and you have a better chance of success. By that I mean you have to take charge offensively. Move the ball down the field 10 yards at a time. eat the clock. Enter the red zone and score! STOP THEM defensively!! It’s not new and it’s not rocket science. Coaches lose sight of this at the high school and junior football level. This is why repetition is necessary. It breeds success.
First of all. As a head coach, you must define your entire practice, your program and your philosophy. Usually, a youth football training lasts 2 hours. No matter how many nights or days you practice, you can use the same principles that will be described in this article.
BEFORE starting ANY practice, as the head coach, you should have a parent/coach meeting WITH the children attending the meeting. During the meeting, be sure to cover the following points:
- Overview of your program
- Your training philosophy
- Introduction to coaches and their responsibilities
- Eligibility criteria
- Team rules
- Expectations for player conduct on and off the pitch (including at school)
- Expectations for Parental Conduct On and Off the Field
- Importance of following staff instructions
- Goals and objectives of the season
- Training and Workout Routines
- Player selection (for squad and starting positions)
- Inclement Weather Contingency Plans for Outdoor Sports
- Stay hydrated in hot weather
- Pre-match and pre-training meals. What and when to eat.
I also have my parents sign a form indicating that they understand everything that happened during the meeting and that they understand that their involvement is as a supporter of their child AND the team. I will give you what I use in a future article.
I also have the children sign an agreement. Lots of good stuff in there too. It teaches them responsibility and commitment. I’ll give you what I use in a future article as well.
We have now laid the groundwork for your practices and what is expected of everyone involved.
This is the program I run for my practices. It imposes execution by repetition. That works. The schedule is as follows:
- 6:30 p.m. – 6:50 p.m. – warm-up/calisthenics and 2 laps
- 6:50 a.m. – 7:35 a.m. – split into stations (blocking, tackling, running, etc.), usually 3 stations are good. Each station lasts 15 minutes. Do not make groups too large to give reps to players at each station.
- 7:35 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. – Offensive or defensive drills. Divide into groups and perform your exercises. I say offensive or defensive because one evening I perform offensive exercises, one evening defensive exercises and one evening special teams.
- 8:00 a.m. – 8:20 a.m. – Scrum. One night you mix your offense, one night defense and one night special teams + offense AND defense.
- 8:20 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. – Warm-up
The schedule can be modified to adapt to your situation. One thing you need to understand when coaching youth football. Repetition and practice lead to excellent execution.
During your training sessions, you as the head coach should go around the different stations, drills or whatever in order to get to know your players and their abilities. You have the final say in the decisions that are made in order to better know your players AND their abilities.
Make sure ALL of your players receive the proper coaching. You have no idea how many times I’ve seen other coaches drop a player because they didn’t think they “got what it takes”. Having what it takes isn’t the issue here. COACHING is the problem. As long as you and your coaches do exactly that, train, you should see improvement in ALL of your players and that should be one of your goals.
I would like to add one last thing before concluding. In 24 years of coaching youth football, I have been fortunate to have led successful programs. I had maybe 3 or 4 losing seasons. I hate losing and I tell my players and my parents that. If/when we lose, we lose as a team. I NEVER show poor sportsmanship. My teams WIN and LOSE as a team. Coaches included. I am a very loud and fiery trainer. If the player does something good, I’m the first to congratulate him. The same is true when they are wrong. The first to tell them it’s unacceptable. I do this for all their behaviors and commitments on and off the pitch.
I’ve always said “Before you can win as a team and be successful, you must learn to lose gracefully as a team.”
