I was talking with a major college football scout and asked him what they were looking for in a high school quarterback. He said 4 things! The number one thing they look for in a quarterback is mental and physical strength. The second thing they are looking for is QB footwork. The third thing they are looking for is vision. And finally, arm strength to make all of the quarterback’s throws. If a quarterback has these four abilities, you might be eligible for a football scholarship!
A lot of mental toughness comes with football class work. One of the most underrated phases of quarterback training is in the movie theater and the blackboard. Most teams give the quarterback scouting reports for the coaches to review with them. Many teams, after reviewing scouting reports, ask quarterbacks to write down the various passing shots. Such as Goal Line Package, 2 Minute Offense Package, 3rd Down Package. the non-huddle package if you have one, the first pass package down. From this list, you will usually have 2-4 pieces chosen and reviewed.
So, as you can see, a quarterback has to spend time learning to read defenses! I see there are quarterback training websites now that sell quarterback dvds how to read defenses. I strongly suggest any serious QB get them!
Quarterback footwork can be developed in many ways. Skipping rope, benches and skipping boxes. Play football, play tennis, play basketball, ladder drills, obstacle drills. Again, there are some great cheap football training DVDs you can buy on the internet. Just search for Quarterback Workout DVDs or Football Workout DVDs.
The nest is the vision, it is the skill that all great quarterbacks must have. You need to be able to read defenses, find the open receiver, and make the throw! The first part of reading defenses is identifying pass coverage. Is it 2 coverage, 3 coverage, man-to-man, zone, or combination pass type defense, or is a blitz coming? Again, all QBs must spend time in the classroom study film and learn to read defenses!
Finally, all quarterbacks in the upper tiers have an arm strong enough to make all pass throws into a passing tree. Typical routes include a quick exit, a quick tilt, or a quick hitch.
The passing tree includes 3 stages of descent. Typical routes include a quick exit, a quick incline, or a quick hitch. 5 step skips, with typical routes are curl, out, in. And 7 step drop or shotgun, with typical routes being the deep, deep, return, post and go route.
This passing tree and the throws used are the bread and butter used by every college and NFL coach or scout. If you want to play quarterback, you need to learn these throws. You can attend a quarterback camp or alternatively, there are great low cost quarterback passing drill DVDs that you can buy on the internet to see more detailed quarterback passing drills.
