3 Golden Rules to Become the Best Footballer (Soccer Player) You Can Be
In this article, I will introduce you to 3 golden rules that will help you become the best soccer player/soccer player you can be.
1. Think about your football in a useful and positive way
How you think about your football on a day-to-day basis determines how you feel about your football in general, and how you feel about your football strongly influences how quickly you learn in training and how well you perform on match day.
I spend many hours every week teaching Premiership footballers how to think effectively after training and before match day. Here is a technique you can use:
I want you to write down your three best matches. Write them down in detail as we have already discussed. It will give you something to come back to every day that will help you build and maintain a strong football image. It will help you take control of the memories you have of your football.
When writing your top three games, remember key moments. Key moments such as runs you made, tackles, blocks, assists and headers you won. Add sentiments to your story – “I felt strong, confident and powerful” and “I felt like I was unbeatable”.
These are exciting images to remember and reinforce. If your friends or loved ones were looking at you, what do you think they would have seen? Also note their point of view.
When you spend time off the pitch reminiscing about times when you gave your best, you feed your brain and body images and images of confidence. The footballer who engages in this technique daily will build their confidence and feel good ahead of their training session and matches – giving themselves a better chance to learn faster and play better with more consistency.
2. Practice with a purpose
Having an abundance of skill in football is nice to have, but no matter how talented you are, it’s the quality of your training that determines the trajectory of your football. In fact, it’s so important that I advise clients to stop using the word training and start calling it hands-on. And “any ancient practice” is not enough – it is the deliberate practice that is important.
Deliberate practice is not easy and it begins in the brain. He is not a footballer who trains for an hour, plays a little five-a-side football and has fun with friends. It’s mentally and physically taxing. It is a kind of focused, repetitive practice in which you are always monitoring your performance, correcting, experimenting, listening to immediate and constant feedback, and always pushing beyond what you have already achieved.
Next time you go to practice, be sure to set yourself a goal, preferably a specific area you want to improve. Concentrate fully and get out of your comfort zone by trying things that you don’t find easy on the court.
3. Control the controllables
The biggest killer in football is distraction. Taking your mind off the game can have dangerous consequences. Correct focus in football starts with understanding what you can and cannot control. There are a lot of things in football that you can’t control and if you focus on them you can easily get distracted while playing.
The most obvious are the weather and the state of the terrain. It is quite obvious that you cannot control these aspects. And yet, how many footballers focus on them? Several times I walked onto a pitch with the team before a game and heard someone say, “I can’t believe how bad the pitch is. How can we play well on this?” Where do you think the focus will be on this football player’s performance during the game? Do you think he could be easily distracted?
Similar to the condition of the pitch, I heard footballers complaining about the weather. Last season a player came to see me on Thursday and said he was hoping it wouldn’t rain in Saturday’s game because he decided he sucked playing in the rain. Of course, I pointed out that if he wanted to have a career in professional football in England, he was probably going to have to get used to playing in the rain (it rains a lot in England!). Kidding aside, do you think this player’s in-game reflection was helpful? His focus on performance would inevitably be damaged if it rained – something he couldn’t control.
Before the next time you play, write down some things you can control, like your “body language” and “the confidence with which you perform your role”, and try to focus on those. Avoid focusing your attention on things you can’t control – they will only distract your mind from what’s important during the game.
Of course, it’s not just the mental side of performance, but these three rules represent excellent bases. They will help you become the best soccer player or soccer player you can be!
