College Football – BCS Explained

Replacing what was known as the Bowl Alliance, the Bowl Championship Series is the most recent effort to crown a national champion. The Conference Commissioners and AD Notre Dame are the administrators of the BCS. Thanks to a scoring system that identifies the teams that must face each other at the end of the season for the national championship, these are the two teams that have obtained the highest marks.

Originally the BCS consisted of four bowls namely Rose, Sugar, Orange and Fiesta but since the beginning

Once the votes have been collected, the relative strength of each team will then be calculated using a special formula, where a perfect score is 1. Teams that follow will be assigned a number lower than number 1. The final average A team’s BCS is determined by an average finish of the three elements.

In 2005, the AP decided it no longer wanted to be involved in choosing a national champion, so the NCAA created the Harris Interactive poll. Harris Interactive is a market research company specializing in Internet research. After being commissioned by the NCAA, Harris Interactive developed a poll for college football as a replacement for the AP poll. 114 voters from a group or past and present former players, coaches, administrators and media participated in the survey. Each week, the top 25 teams are identified through votes submitted by the voter. The first poll is not submitted until the second half of September and no longer passes a pre-season or post-season poll.

The USA Today Coaches’ Poll, the second of two “people” elements, is all made up of members of the American Football Coaches Association making up 61 Division 1-A head coaches. Each head coach submits their ballot containing their top 25 picks each week. Unlike the Harris Poll, the Coaches Poll also submits a pre-season and post-season poll. The last of the three elements is the computer survey. Composed of six different calculations, each of the programs was chosen in 1998 with the creation of BCS. The six people responsible for the programs are Anderson & Hester, Richard Billingsley, Colley Matrix, Kenneth Masey, Jeff Sagarin and Peter Wolfe. The computer program does not use a margin of victory and they each use different formulas to calculate timing strength. Teams also go through a top 25 ranking with the computer poll. The IT element is created through the four IT rankings used by each of the teams. The highest and lowest computer ranking teams are eliminated and the other four are averaged.
