Road To The 2013 NFL Draft: Georgia 51 – Tennessee 44

The scouting process for the draft mainly takes place from September to mid-April. The sports testing part of the evaluation process takes center stage from February. However, how the NFL draft prospects perform in real football games is what matters most. Here’s a closer look at some of the notable prospects in the Georgia-Tennessee contest and how they impacted the outcome:

QB Tyler Bray, Tennessee, Junior: Statistics can be deceiving in sports. This is especially true when evaluating the quarterback’s play. Bray had a decent game against Georgia (24 completions on 45 attempts (53%), 281 yards (6.2 yards per attempt), 2 touchdowns (would have had a 3rd, but his receiver dropped a well-thrown deep ball ), 3 interceptions (the last was a desperate pass on the game’s final play) and 1 fumble), but turned the ball over several times when Tennessee needed him to make plays in the 2nd half. The Tennessee quarterback has the arm strength and quick release to land every NFL throw. Bray also throws a fairly deep ball with a nice combination of power and touch. However, his footwork and release point can be erratic and result in inconsistent accuracy. He missed Justin Hunter on crossover routes a few times on passes he just needs to finish. Protection was good and Hunter was open. It should have been pitch-and-catch, but it wasn’t.

Bray’s second interception of the game was a killer for the Vols. Tennessee lost only 7 points at the start of the 4th quarter. The Vols drive and are able to throw the ball over Georgia. Bray tries to do a back shoulder throw from midfield. It would have been a good intermediate completion and would have maintained the draw potential. The problem was that Bray’s pass was thrown poorly and allowed the Georgia cornerback to have a better shot on the ball than his receiver. The back-shoulder pass was thrown too far inside and the Georgian defensive back nailed the interception.

Bray had a chance for redemption when Tennessee won the ball with just under 2 minutes left and still down 7. The Vols reached the Bulldogs 28-yard line before Bray stepped in the pocket and be stripped of the ball for a huge turnover. How a quarterback plays at the critical moment is what separates them. Bray had his opportunities and either threw or fumbled them. His protection was good throughout the game and Tennessee was able to run the ball. Hopefully the game against Georgia will help him improve. His accuracy, timing, decision-making and mental toughness are all areas that need improvement. Bray has the arm, clearance and height that NFL teams look for in a quarterback. However, he looked like a prospect who could use another year of experience to become stronger and a more polished passer before entering the NFL.

WR Justin Hunter, Tennessee, Junior: The talented wide receiver has played better than his walking stats indicate (3 receptions for 46 yards (15.3 par)). Hunter was open twice in the middle for good potential gains, but his quarterback was off target. Hunter is still recovering from ACL surgery performed last season, but is coming off his breaks well. He did a good job preventing an interception when Tyler Bray forced a pass on him in the 2nd quarter. Hunter runs the incline well and at six-foot-four is a big target. Georgia didn’t rush him or be very physical with him. Hunter needs to grow in size and strength to better handle NFL cornerbacks.

G Dallas Thomas, Tennessee, Senior: Tennessee rushed for 197 yards on 40 carries (4.9 par) and scored three times. Thomas was solid at left guard and helped open up holes for running play. He seemed to gain strength as the match progressed. Thomas has a solid punch and played with leverage. He didn’t look stiff and showed pop in his hips. The former left tackle can move his feet and slide into pass protection.

QB Aaron Murray, Georgia, Junior: The Bulldogs quarterback was in complete control and split the Tennessee defense. Murray completed 20 passes on 26 attempts (77%) for 286 yards (11 yards per attempt) with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Murray’s interception was the result of an angled pass at the line of scrimmage and some fine defensive play. Murray launched the back shoulder fade in time and in the right place. He also read the blitz well and quickly got rid of football. Murray spread the ball and used his tight end well. The two-year-old starter’s biggest mistake in that game was when he let Tennessee take the ball away from him after a sack deep in his own territory. Murray always hit receivers in stride and was at the top of his short-to-mid passing game. He lacks impressive physical tools, but his throwing mechanics and footwork are consistent and fundamentally sound. Murray will face stronger defenses on the road and it will be interesting to see how well he plays.

OLB Jarvis Jones, Georgia, Junior: Jones uncharacteristically had 8 quiet tackles and a half tackle for the loss. Tennessee’s offensive tackles did a good job of containing their outside run. Jones couldn’t counter to break free. He will need to add variety to his arsenal to give the more athletic attacking tackles he faces something else to defend against. His hustle led to a few running stoppages, but he didn’t make his defensive presence felt in this game.

DT John Jenkins, Georgia, senior: Tennessee gained a bunch of yards by running the ball between tackles. Jenkins looked slow and got off the ball without much explosion. His main contribution was recovering Tyler Bray’s fumble in the 4th quarter. Jenkins finished the match with a tackle. He showed limited range and fringe instincts for anticipating plays. Tennessee was able to move him in the direction he wanted and holes opened up, especially in the red zone.

FS Bacarri Rambo, Georgia, senior: Rambo saw his first action of the season after serving a suspension. Rambo misplayed a pass early in the game and was lucky the receiver went down, otherwise it would have been a big play. Rambo mistimed his jump and couldn’t get the ball down. Rambo finished the game with 9 tackles and was solid against the run. He came quickly on a backhand to help limit the gain. Rambo got his feet wet in this game and is expected to make more plays as the season progresses.

SS Shawn Williams, Georgia, senior: Williams was steady with 6 tackles and helped limit the damage on some Tennessee runs. Williams is a good tackler, but hasn’t helped much in pass coverage. His anticipation was average against Tennessee. Williams took good angles in pursuit.
