The "Football Playbook" Road to Destruction in Youth Football
Last week a frantic person called me asking if I had a playbook for sale that could be used for a junior football team. They said they played high school football 20 years ago, never coached junior football before, and just needed a playbook to get their team started. They knew all about the “exercises”.
I explained that my book was not just a playbook, but a step-by-step process that included a small but very effective playbook section. This person told me they “just needed a playbook”. I can guarantee you that this coach is likely to make each of the common youth football coaching mistakes detailed on pages 27-33 of my book. His team will most likely be the one that fails miserably in terms of wins and losses, but whose kids aren’t having much fun and have huge retention issues. I don’t know how a playbook by itself is of much value to a youth football team.
The coaches who call and talk to me with an open mind are the ones who email me incredible success stories at the end of the season. The coach from the story above and others we never hear from again. Embarrassed by their failures, I’m sure, and following the “Playbook Path” to a disastrous season. These disastrous seasons often lead to revolts by players and parents and seem to be one of the main reasons why most youth football managers only coach for a season or two.
The playbook fallacy:
On the other hand, there are coaches like KJ, BJ, DB, KB, GB and many more. I can tell right away after talking on the phone with them for 5 minutes that they are going to have monster rotation seasons. These are the teams we’ll be talking about on our end-of-season Wall of Fame. It has to do with an inquisitive nature and an openness to learning. Successful people in life are like that about everything, it’s a process they go through. They have a problem, they admit they don’t have all the answers, they try to understand the critical success factors of the business, they do the research and they come up with a plan which in many cases has its proven elsewhere to solve the exact same problem. problem.
For starters, most playbooks I’ve seen or purchased were nothing more than a bunch of backfield action drawings with little or nothing said about player blocking responsibilities. Many don’t even have lines drawn for the linemen to block. Others have blocking established against a 4-4 defense but nothing is said about how to block against a 5-3 or 6-2 and no rules for blocking are given. Others have 150 to 200 games in them, obviously a compilation of many different offenses. But these are football games, not offenses, there is a huge difference. Anyone can draft a bunch of football plays, not everyone can draft an offense.
An offense is a collection of complementary football games built around a football philosophy with built-in blocking rules and detailed practice points for each game. Most playbooks contain none of this.
Don’t even tell me about first steps, blocking progressions, technique, job descriptions, player ratings, training plans, priorities, defense, special teams, implementation , fitting and freezing, scouting, match day management, player and parent management, etc. etc The playbook is such a small part of the puzzle. Important, but a small piece and anyone who doesn’t understand that is usually doomed when it comes to coaching youth football.
The coaches don’t have a playbook and think you’re ready for the season, even though it’s my playbook. A playbook isn’t a silver bullet, no matter how great.
