Amy Fearn – The First Woman Referee In England
Amy Fearn made English football history when she became the first woman to referee an English Football League match.
The match between Coventry City and Nottingham Forest took place on Tuesday 9 February 2010 at the Ricoh Arena and was initially refereed by Tony Bates, who started the match. He suffered a calf injury and had to be replaced after 70 minutes. He was then replaced by Amy Fearn, who was one of his assistants, making her the first woman to referee a league match in England.
Fearn, 31, a referee since he was 16, was a Football Conference referee and an assistant referee in the Football League for almost seven years.
Since the 1990s, women have been more properly referred to as assistant referee linesmen, but this was the first time a woman had refereed a Football League game. The historic moment was greeted with cheers from the crowd of 18,000 as Fearn blew his first whistle. With Coventry already 1-0 up, she didn’t have to make any controversial decisions during her twenty minutes in charge.
Fearn would like to officiate in the Premier League one day, although that possibility still seems a long way off in the future. The question remains as to why women do not regularly referee football matches
Although her twenty minutes of League football were uneventful, she was heavily criticized by Luton Town manager Mike Newell in 2006 when she headed the line and denied her team a penalty. Newell was quoted as saying “It’s bad enough with incompetent referees and linesmen, but if you start bringing women into the game you’re in big trouble”, he then suggested that women in football were just political correctness. Newell was later fined for his comments and issued a full apology.
The same goes for the lack of female referees due to the chauvinistic attitude of a male-dominated sport, or are women simply not up to the task. The role of referee is considered hard work both physically and mentally, but a national shortage of referees could be solved if more women were encouraged to take on the role.
Maybe it’s about proving that women are up to it, seizing opportunities, avoiding mistakes, and demonstrating that they can do the job just as well. If so, then Amy Fearn has taken the first positive step on what could be a very long journey.
