Can You Blame the Football Field for a Knee Injury?
When you hurt your knee in the field, all you probably want to do is die…or pass out for a while until you get your hands on some morphine. Sometimes the dog pile calls for your knee, sometimes you land on it badly catching a pass, and, if you’re playing on artificial turf, maybe the court decides it’s had enough of the 200-pound bodies that get rush everywhere and you’re left with a knee injury crying out for knee pain relief.
In the NFL, just under a quarter of all injuries are knee-related, and 75% of surgeries resulting from injury are for knee-related issues. Well, it’s a contact sport, right? So is it not so? May be. But there is a lot of controversy that artificial turf increases the risk of knee and ankle injury. Sports knee pads can help support the knees during play, but if the odds are already stacked against you on artificial turf, you might also need an athletic knee pad to recover from an injury. So the question is, why would players prefer to play on this turf that seems to require more knee support to avoid injury?
Players are reporting increased “playability” on the next-gen artificial turf, which is great, but there always seems to be a downside, right? Scientists have identified two of the most common causes of artificial turf injuries. Coefficient of friction refers to how difficult it is for the player to move after touching the turf. For example, if a ball carrier makes a strong redirect while running the ball and gets tackled, but turf has less flexibility than grass, they could distribute the force to the more flexible part of the leg ( the knee), not allowing the foot to slide as it should, injuring the knee. The coefficient of restitution refers to the ability of the surface to absorb shocks. So if a player hits the turf while catching a pass, even the best artificial turf doesn’t absorb the shock as much as real turf. This has been compared to landing on moderately “padded” concrete (if such a thing exists); I’ll take some weed.
Although playing on grass rather than artificial turf can reduce the risk of injury, wearing knee pads while playing on artificial turf can also reduce the risk of knee injury. West Point researchers concluded that knee injuries were alleviated in football players who wore knee braces. While experts recommend knee pads as a support to prevent and rehabilitate injuries, more studies are needed to determine the full benefits of knee pads in contact sports. But for now, consider some pros who wear knee pads in-game and off the field for continued knee support: Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, and New England Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker. former New York Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins.
