I Love NFL Football! Let Me Count The Ways
As far as I’m concerned, there are two seasons in America (no matter what the weatherman says!). There is the football season and the off-season. Then there’s everything else in between.
Why am I saying such a ridiculous thing?
Because I am an unconditional football fan!
Heck, I like it all – as long as it involves an oblong-shaped ball, is played on a 120-yard-long pitch, and involves blocking and tackling – I’m all for it.
But as long as I live there will be never to be any game as thrilling and majestic as NFL football. There’s a reason the National Football League is the most popular sport in the United States. Because it’s the best!
But I know: you want to be convinced.
Good. I will convince you with three reasons.
1) Football is in line with our lifestyle. Don’t get me wrong, I like other sports too. But have you ever watched a baseball or basketball game that started at 10 p.m.? Listen, I like competition as much as the others but I have to go to work in the morning!
And I know Prime Time Football can be late too (for those of us on the East Coast), but at least the majority of games are played on Sundays. And that’s the key, because most people don’t go to school and work on Sundays. Big Win in my book.
2) The NFL presents The Game at its highest level. Listen, I know there are a lot of people who will tell me that Pro is better than College (yes, that’s an argument for another time). And it’s good.
But no one can tell me there are finer athletic feats on display every week than on The Football Field. The incredible catches, crushing blows and extremely fine plays on offense, defense and special teams of all kinds.
I have no idea how officials can get most of their calls in real time. Even in super-duper replays, it’s hard to tell whether or not a player’s toes are touching the white stripe.
How not to appreciate this athleticism?
3) Every game is so important. The weekly build up to Sunday is an incredible crescendo until kickoff. And whether you’re talking Week 4 or Week 14, every game feels like a bargain.
Think about it, when your favorite team loses 4 in a row, that means they didn’t win. in a month! And because there are so few games played, the significance and scale of this week’s game is larger than life.
Okay, maybe that’s how it is for me.
And that’s the beauty of it. There really is nothing in the world like football.
