The Top 6 Biggest Draft Mistakes a Rookie Fantasy Football Owner Can Make

1. Drafting a defense or kicker in the middle rounds

It’s fantasy football 101. Wait until the last two rounds to choose a kicker and a defense. It’s nearly impossible to tell from year to year which defenses will finish in the top 10. Heck, many top 10 defenses don’t even get drafted, but many owners will fall in love with some teams that were good on the season. last to find out that they are underperforming this year. The same principle applies to kickers. Really, there isn’t much difference between the top kicker and the 12th best kicker. Many solid kickers can be acquired during the season very easily. For these reasons, it is better to wait until the very end of your draft to choose a kicker and a defense.

2. Draft of a player who was cut by an NFL team

One of the most embarrassing scenarios in a fantasy football draft is the owner choosing a running back or wide receiver who was just cut by the NFL team days before the draft. It is an absolutely lost choice. Now, if that happens with a kicker in the final round of the draft, the pain may be minimal. Kicker cuts are also high profile, but with any other position, that lack of preparation is inexcusable. Do lots of homework and don’t make this mistake.

3. Repechage of an injured player (out for the season)

There’s an old poker that says if you don’t know who the sucker at the table is, it has to be you. If you want to know where the easy money is in the fantasy football draft, it’s the guy picking a running back in Round 5 who tore an ACL in a preseason game the week before. The room will burst into laughter. Don’t be that guy. Do your homework. If time is limited before the draft, at least check the latest news and injury report before heading to your draft. It could save you a great humiliation.

4. Wait for turn 3 to choose a RB

I’ve talked about this in my draft strategy articles on Fantasy Football Aid, fantasy owners need to identify rare positions in their league and pick those players early. In most leagues, the RB position is rare. Let’s say each team starts 2 RBs, but the NFL only has 32 starting running backs. In a 12-team fantasy football league, 24 of 32 ball carriers (75%) are required. When you consider that many teams use a running back by committee (rbbc) approach, the actual percentage of RB required increases even more. Conversely, only 12 of the 32 quarterbacks (37.5%) are required. That means RBs will be harder to find later in the draft and throughout the season. QBs will be abundantly available. It’s wise to take an RB with one or both of your first two picks.

5. Have a smaller roster of players than will be drafted

This will drive experienced draft players crazy. He’s the guy who scrambles through the last three rounds of the draft because they brought in a roster of 48 running backs, but 60 were drafted. He’s the guy who asks for the list of his neighbors because he doesn’t know who’s available. If there are 12 teams in the fantasy league and each can draft 5 running backs on the roster, you will need to bring a pre-draft ranking list of 60 running backs, for example. This is a simple pre-draft planning task.

6. Lack of strategy

Each owner must enter the project with a plan. Whether it’s using value-based writing techniques, prioritizing, or a simple printout from a reputable expert, strategy is key to success. Know what position you want to target in the first three or four rounds, for example, RB WR RB QB or RB RB WR QB. Highlight a list of sleepers you’d like to grab in the middle towers. Do you prefer to stock running backs based on the rating system and position rarity? Do you want to complete the starting formation requirements first and then draft saves? These are questions that need to be considered before the project.

When I go into a draft, I write down my ideal starting lineup based on where I pick each round and the ADP (average draft position) value of the players. It’s OK to get a few points ahead of projected ADP, but don’t get more than a lap or you won’t get good value.

I hope you found these tips useful. You don’t need to know everything about how to play fantasy football to incorporate these rookie tips. Experienced owners will find them obvious, but for beginners, avoiding these basic mistakes will save you an awkward moment.
