When Will I Ever Learn?

For both men and women, there are five stages of life: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, midlife, and maturity. Two of these stages are periods of transition (adolescence and middle life), and these two stages have many, many transitions in common. One of the most important is the change in the levels of sex hormones: in adolescence they increase; in the forties, they decrease. Since hormones directly impact every cell in your body, these changes have as big of an effect on your body as the hormones themselves. The variations themselves cause many of the physical and emotional side effects that we associate with these transition times. In fact, they have more similarities than dissimilarities.

No wonder we are tempted to compare these two very parallel periods of life transition. As you get more deeply involved in the transition to midlife, doesn’t it bring back memories of adolescence, with its periods of hormone-induced agony and ecstasy, clarity and madness? Looking back on it now, I can definitely see the similarities. I also remember that after a while I settled into the routine of adulthood, focused on my career, my relationships, and keeping myself healthy and happy. Almost without my knowledge, adolescence has vanished from my personal history, to be replaced by adult preoccupations. So if the two transition periods are so similar, how long will it be before you leave behind the craziness of midlife and “settle” into comfortable maturity? A word of advice: don’t hold your breath!

The transition you experience in midlife is happening on many levels, some of which affect much deeper levels of consciousness than ever before. Midlife puts you in intimate contact with your deepest self where your personal destiny lies. This “core” of your being not only contains your true self, but it is also where your power resides. You might think of it as the molten core of your personal planet, ever-fluid, ever-changing, ever-ready to burst with creative fire. Think of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii, where lava fountains feed gentle ‘a’a lava flows that flow inexorably towards the sea. This volcano is constantly creative, though rarely, if ever, truly violent. He’s an immense setter that expands the Hawaiian terrain with impressive yet quiet intensity. Tapping into your own heart during the midlife transition should lead to similar effects: broadening your horizons while wielding soft power. Once the core of your being has been tapped, there is no turning back. You have entered a period of intense but quiet creativity that will last you the rest of your life. Midlife creates the passage beyond knowledge and even understanding, to wisdom.

Wisdom blossoms when you connect with your heart and realize that you are – and will continue to be – a work in progress. Neither you nor anyone else on this planet can ever define you. Although you will often have occasion to answer people’s questions by saying “I am a ‘this'” or “I am a ‘that'”, your answer will always be tentative and incomplete. You will never have the opportunity to adequately express the person you are, because, even in the story, you are always a person in the making. Only after your death will people who knew you be able to say with some degree of accuracy, “That’s who he/she was.” In the meantime, there is always more for them (and for you) to discover, to reveal, to create. Like an onion, there is always another layer to peel. There will never be a time when there is nothing left to discover about yourself. There will always be room for discovery.

When will the quarantine transition be complete? Obviously, between the ages of 60 and 65, your hormones will have completed their depletion process (and you will have overcome them one way or another). Yet part of the process of transitioning to maturity is gaining a deeper awareness of your life as a work in progress and away from anything resembling a fait accompli. There’s a band that I had the privilege of knowing while I was in Canada last week called Warrior Sage. Even their name expresses what your life is (or will be) as a mature person: a combination of courage and wisdom. In fact, the two are so closely related that they are almost indistinguishable from each other. To have the wisdom to be able to accept oneself as one is requires immense courage; having the courage to live your life authentically requires the wisdom to tap into the deepest levels of your destiny. And, what’s more, both require the fundamental virtue of humility: getting to know yourself as you really are (not as you wish you were) and acting on it.

when are you going to learn? When will you no longer have to deal with fears and frustrations, mistakes and mistakes and the feelings of guilt that come with them? When Lucy wanted to hold the ball for Charlie Brown, he exclaimed, “How long, Lord?” As he ran back to the ball, Lucy said, “You’re quoting from the sixth chapter of Isaiah, aren’t you, Charlie Brown? sorry… “In fact, there is a note of protest in the question posed by Isaiah, for we could tell that he was unwilling to accept the finality of the judgment of the Lord…” When Charlie Brown s rushed to kick the soccer ball and Lucy took it out in front of him (again), landing Charlie Brown on his back with a WHUMP! she said, “How long?” Your whole life, Charlie Brown… your whole life. Yet even as we struggle to “accept the finality of the Lord’s judgment,” our wisdom, courage, and humility will teach us, one day at a time, that “all is good.”
